Identification required

Please provide the following forms of identification at our meeting.

1. Primary Identification Documents

Notaries in England generally requireone primary form of identificationfrom the client, which includes:

  • Passport: A valid passport is the most commonly accepted form of identification as it provides proof of identity and nationality.
  • National Identity Card: If the client is a citizen of an EU/EEA country, a national identity card may be used.
  • UK Driving License: A photocard driving license issued by the UK government can also be used as a form of identification, provided it is current and includes a photo of the holder.

2. Secondary Identification Documents

In some cases, a notary public may also request asecondary form of identificationto corroborate the primary ID. This could include:

  • Recent Utility Bill: A bill such as gas, water, electricity, or council tax, issued within the last three months, showing the client’s name and address.
  • Bank or Building Society Statement: A statement issued within the last three months showing the client’s name and address.
  • Council Tax Bill: A valid council tax bill for the current year, again showing name and address.
  • Mortgage Statement: A statement from a recognised lender, issued within the last 12 months.

3. Additional Considerations

  • Proof of Address: Notaries will often require proof of address in addition to proof of identity. This is why documents like utility bills or bank statements are important, as they confirm where the individual resides.
  • Certified Translations: If the identification documents are not in English, the notary may require certified translations of those documents.
  • Corporate Clients: For corporate clients, notaries may also require documents relating to the company, such as a Certificate of Incorporation, Memorandum and Articles of Association, and evidence of the individual’s authority to represent the company (e.g., a board resolution or power of attorney).

4. Specific Requirements

  • Original Documents: Notaries will require original documents for verification. Photocopies or digital copies are generally not accepted.
  • Current and Valid: All identification documents must be current and valid at the time of the notarial act. Expired documents are not accepted.
